Requiem for a Dream (2000) :-
I have always heard the term Mind bending movie but i think this is the first time i felt a movie which i can call Mind Boiling Movie. This movie is definitely not for mainstream audience as this has tendency to make people go crazy. Story is very simple can be condensed to a single line ie drug addiction , post effects of it and only has four important characters nothing more ut yet how they managed to pull this movie to a 100+ minutes film marks the ingenious work , hats off to Darren Aronofsky.
At first i mean initial 20 minutes i was like what the yack is this movie all about and felt it too irritating n annoying seeing the type of story telling , especially that irritating TV Show " Who is the Winner , Juice by Sara Juice by Sara..whoa...Sara Juice Sara juice" oooff.....it even gave me vomiting sensation . Very horrible and i thought why should a movie be this complex when the story is very simple and more importantly why was it made so confusing. Definitely our mind gets heated up while processing this movie cut shot frames with fast phased edits.I wanted to stop watching this movie exactly at this point...but something told me its not right to decide half way and i decided to complete the movie. To my surprise the following incidents totally changed my view on this film.
I just realized that the director was able to exactly capture the moments what goes inside a drug addicts mind , how they live their life and what kind of problems do they face. I also realized that the fast phase shots are purposefully placed as on how those addicts adrenaline pumps up and on how they start seeing things around them. At first i thought this movie was from a narrator perspective but only later i felt that its not but director wants us to travel as the characters himself and what we are watching is that from the eyes of each character in the movie. Movie had four main characters a mother ( sara ) , Son ( Harry ) , a lover ( Marion ) , a friend ( Tyrone ) and director was able to show us from every angle of their life giving equal importance to every character . Darren was also success in making viewers empathize on their situation when their own life shatters in-front of them just because of addition. Be it love , friendship, care, affection this movie covers it all and how much they wanted to get back to their normal life but their despair due to addiction was wonderfully portrayed in here. Though this movie talks about drug addicts , its a indirect message from Director to the audience giving us the extent of Drug addiction effects and i am sure any Drug addicts or those who want to go high by watching this movie will definitely change their mind, that's the success of the director.
Overall this is one of the best movies i watched in recent times and this is definitely a movie not to be missed. Darren could have said the same story in a much easy way but he made sure he wanted to present this movie from the characters point of view and i believe that the success of ths movie and that's where this movie gets unique by itself. Hand motion cam , some top able shots and there are moments which will define you the trademark of Darren and its really a breath taking cinematography. Not but not least..this movie is nothing without its Background score and that adds up the extra punch to the movie. A must watch movie for a true Movie buffs. Happy watching.
